1.1.ResultsforArtificialClusters
Weconstructed vearti cialclusterswithknownproperties,i.e.,solarmetallicity,extinctionE(B V)=0.1,agesof8,60,and200Myr,and1and10Gyr.TheSEDsforthesearti cialclustersweretakenfromourmodelgrid,andatypicalobservationalerrorof0.1magwasassumed.Subsequently,weredeterminedthebest- tclusterparametersusingourEScode,andcomparedthemtotheoriginalvalues.Weconstructedanumberofadditionalclusterscharacterizedbycoloro sets(tooredortooblueby0.1mag)toassesstheaccuracyofourmodel ts.Fromthisstudyweconcludethat
1.Thechoiceofpassbandcombinationrequiredforaproperdetermi-nationofthebasicclusterparameters(age,metallicity,extinction)canbeoptimizedtowardstheexpectedmeanparametervalues.2.Inordertodeterminereliableages,theuseofultraviolet(UV)pass-bandsisvitalforallages.Includinganear-infrared(NIR)passbandimprovestheaccuracyfurther.3.Formetallicitydeterminations,NIRobservationsaremostimpor-tant,whiletheUVisessentialforyoungsystems(ages≤100Myr).4.TheextinctionisbestdeterminedusingUV+opticalcolors.Ingeneral,theaccuracyandthebestpassbandcombinationareastrongfunctionoftheageofthecluster’sstellarpopulation(Anderset.al.,2002b,inprep.).Theavailabilityofobservationsspanningtheentire
