Objectives
In this module, we will describe how acute and chronic noise exposure can cause hearing loss. We will also cover noise exposure guidelines and ways to reduce your noise exposure. At the end of this module you will understand:
How exposure to noise can affect hearing
Noise measurements
How exposure to noise can be reduced
How to use personal protective equipment to reduce noise exposure
The components of a hearing conservation program
How an audiometric test is performed
Noise and Hearing
High noise levels damage sensitive structures in the inner ear, causing permanent hearing damage. The resulting hearing loss may make it difficult
to understand everyday sounds and speech or cause tinnitus, a permanent ringing in the ears.
Noise Exposure
Noise exposure can occur at home or at work. Fortunately, noise exposure for
most IBM service personnel is below the levels that can result in hearing impairment. Still, because you might encounter excessive noise levels when
you visit a noisy customer location or participate in noisy recreational activities,
you should know how to protect your hearing.
