Inthisarticlewetellthestoryofthecreationandevolutionofasub eld,popularlyknownas‘‘IPE,’’thathasbeencloselyassociatedwithInternationalOrganization(IO)foralmostthirtyyears.Initially,IPEwasde nedbythetopicsthatitinvesti-gated,suchastrade, nance,rawmaterialspolitics,andmultinationalcorporations.Scholarsassociatedwiththe elddrewoneconomicsandonavarietyofexistingtheoreticalorientations,notablyrealism,liberalism,andMarxismatthesystemiclevel,andMarxism,statism,andpluralismatthedomesticlevel.

Overtimetheboundariesofthissub eld,aswede neit,havebeensetlessbysubjectmatterthanbytheoreticalperspectives.Whereassomeresearchprogramshavereliedheavilyoneconomics,othershavedistancedthemselvesbothfromthesubstantiveconcernsofthatdisciplineandtherationalismitrepresents.SinceweareseekinginthisarticletodescribehowtheorizingaboutworldpoliticsasrepresentedinIOevolved,wefocusonIPE,ratherthanonthesubstantiveissuesofinternationalpoliticaleconomywithwhichitbegan.Weusetheterminternationalpoliticaleconomywhenwerefertoreal-worldconnectionsbetweenpoliticsandeconomics;weusethetermIPEwhenwerefertothesub eldofwork,centeredinIOsince1971,thatevolvedfromthestudyofinternationalpoliticaleconomytoanalyzeavarietyofaspectsofworldpolitics.
