Abstract.Thispapergivesareviewofintegrationalgorithmsfor nitedimensionalmechanicalsystemsthatarebasedondiscretevariationalprinci-ples.Thevariationaltechniquegivesauni edtreatmentofmanysymplecticschemes,includingthoseofhigherorder,aswellasanaturaltreatmentofthediscreteNoethertheorem.Theapproachalsoallowsonetoincludeforces,dissipationandconstraintsinanaturalway.Amongstthemanyspeci cschemestreatedasexamples,theVerlet,SHAKE,RATTLE,Newmark,andthesymplecticpartitionedRunge-Kuttaschemesarepresented.
